The fifth and sixth graders loved an end-of-the-year beatboxing session with Mr. Kneel from @hawaiikeikimuseum ! He was fantastic, keeping the students’ attention, engaging them with sound, teaching skills, weaving storytelling throughout, rapping children’s books, and slapping down beats, all in a culturally and developmentally appropriate approach. He was great! So many kids wanted signatures after!

Middle school and High school STEAM students made quick stop motion animation videos with playdo and other materials! Cool to see the creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration!

We have been learning about the Hōkūle`a voyages and components of the wa`a. Students used basic household/STEAM materials to engineer their own wa`a in groups! All were successful in parts of the challenge with some being able to name 4 parts of the canoe and build a wa`a that floats, moves in the wind, and can hold 5 passengers! @hokuleacrew

Auntie Carla, our STEAM teacher, attended the recent HI STEM conference sponsored by @stemworks . So many resources and ways to connect! Great seeing students from so many islands in one place.

We now have 4 AirToobz sets! That means four groups collaborating at once. Students had free exploration of the sets, discussed what worked and didn’t, made their own designs, shared and decided on one design to build, and built it! Lots of engineering design process, collaborative skills, communication, and discovery!

So many great responses to @under_the_ohi_tree with @kevaplanks! Love seeing students capture our local flora and fauna, inspired by the book! They even tried a few birds and nests!

I had a vision of using Ozobots with birds on top of them flying about! We prototyped that vision today with some classes—plenty more to learn and play around with this! Students are understanding more about the kōlea’s migration to Alaska for raising its young! Love applying robotics and STEAM principles to our local flora and fauna!

Dr. Carla visited the @bishopmuseum this morning, visiting with Brad Evans, director of exhibits & production. What a cool exhibit! First off—shout out to our school mascot created by our middle school STEAM students! Loved, loved, loved understanding the exhibit more, seeing how community partners and departments within the museum brought to life cultural, natural, and historical aspects! To see an ‘i‘iwi in 3D bricks?!?! Wow! Can’t wait to share some of these with our students! I am inspired for additional STEAM practices for our classes!

So many beautiful bird creations using the template from @under_the_ohi_tree! Birds were from the book, which we finally read aloud, along with our birds from the bird beak buffet, with each bill being unique! We even listened to some bird calls! I also pulled together some prompts to review what they have been learning about the bird beaks. Students are clamoring for more pictures of birds in flight, videos of birds eating, and more access to these lovely birds!

Of course the children tried to fly them, with some making alterations for better flight!

We recently looked at bird beaks and how they have adapted to fit the preferred foods over time!
We compared them to tools with similar purposes. Nature can inspire us in many ways. The younger children really need to become the bird and/or care for them, often feeding the right in their bill! Anthropomorphizing for the win! Thanks to the photographers for all the gorgeous photos!

We had a fantastic STEAM Expo at the beginning of February! Students submitted their own projects, community partners joined us, and we had many stations, including a STEAM playground! Best one ever! We appreciate the use of the community building from the parks department!

This drawing showed up in one of our STEAM Expo evaluations. At the end of every ‘ohana class, we say “I love steam!” as we raise our hands up high. It has turned into greetings as we arrive at a campus, running in the field as we leave shouting it, chanting it while pounding on desks, and maybe a little interpretive dance! It’s fun to see how they are making it their own! Glad they are growing a fondness and capability for STEAM.

A quick in progress glimpse at high school student responses to Under the ‘Ōhi’a Tree by Erzsi Palko, a local author. Students chose their own STEAM related projects in small groups, such as this ‘elepaio by student K.E., laser cut birds created with help from AI prompts (with lots more finessing along the way, digital storytelling, and cardboard ‘Ōhi’a tree and animal making! Looking forward to their finished projects! @under_the_ohi_tree @birdsnotmosquitoes @besspress

Lights and mirrors became another pathway to explore! One TA discovered she could bounce the sound off the mirror. Another person caught that and was able to send it to another who bounced the light on the wall!

Collaborative embroidery has been another pathway to follow! Of course, 6-7 crept int the stitches! This involved fine motor skills, technology (hoop and needle), art, mathematical patterns, and more. It was great to see some students settle into the meditative benefits of the sewing. We still need lots more practice with this overall. Send us your tips for sewing with children in larger groups please!
